Fix Windows Cannot be Installed to This Disk: The Selected Disk has an MBR Partition

While installing Windows or while upgrading it, you may come across an error saying, “Windows Cannot be installed to disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI system, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks.” This error prohibits you from installing or upgrading new Windows on your PC.

Generally BIOS of your system is set to EFI/UEFI or your boot media DVD/USB is set to boot EFI/UEFI mode. METHOD 1: CHANGING BIOS BOOT SETTINGS

This is the most efficient and reliable method to fix this error. In this method you need to change the UEFI boot settings. Follow the steps given below to fix this error:

  • Reboot your PC. Open your PC settings by pressing F10 or DEL.
  • Go to storage or Boot Devices -> Boot Order -> Disable EFI Boot sources or just change your DVD drive that you are installing Windows with from UEF to SATA or LEGACY MODE.
  • Save changes and then Exit.
  • You are done now. You won’t be getting any error from now on.

METHOD 2: WIPE ALL YOUR DATA USING COMMAND PROMPT

This method ensures 100% fix to this error. But there is one problem in this method. Though you will be able to fix this error, but you will certainly lose all the data on your system. So, Try this method at your own risk. Go through the steps as given below:

  • At the Windows installation screen, go to command prompt by pressing Shift + F10.
  • Type the commands given below, one by one:
    • diskpart
    • list disk
    • clean disk o
    • convert gpt
    • exit
  • Now all your files will be deleted and you can easily install a new Windows on your system without getting any error.
